We have a great opportunity again this year for our Forestry undergrads and grad students to get involved in the community and to pass along some knowledge and passion down to a younger generation of students!
¿uuqinak’uuh/Grandview Elementary is an inner-city school located near Commercial Drive, and our volunteer team has been hard at work over the past year in building relationships and helping to support the teachers and the students in the development and execution of their curriculum. There are several ways in which UBC Forestry undergrads and grads can be involved in this project, and we will be hosting an information session next week with full details.
The info session will be held on Tuesday, January 10th, in FSC 1220, from 12:30pm-1:30pm. Please join us! We’ll have a few treats!
Over the last semester we held a number of events at the Grandview School and in Pacific Spirit Park. These included tree identification, orienteering, and ecology activities for the students and teachers. Our hope is to have even more activities this semester including in-class workshops on a variety of forestry topics, and help with individual projects that the students will be developing. In order to do this we need even more support with more wonderful volunteers from the Faculty of Forestry, and their friends that are in other faculties who might have some knowledge related to forestry or ecology as well! So bring a friend!
Many of the students at Grandview have never had the experience of being in a forest, or engaging with nature in a hands-on way. Your contributions to this project will really make a difference, and give these students some new, exciting, and memorable experiences!
