Welcome to the FUS website! As one of the first major steps for the new year, the FUS Council has decided to introduce something that can be used as a new channel to transfer information within the Faculty. There’s a lot to explore and even more to build on. The success of this website depends on the content and articles sent in not only from FUS Council members, but from many Forestry students. This is your site to communicate with the rest of your colleagues, so take advantage of it.
People Involved in the Initiative
Members of the FUS Council thought it would be worthwhile to update the website, making it more relevant and modern in the Faculty of Forestry. Having events posted in a logical way was something that many of the members thought needed improvement. Posting news and opportunities that may have not been that obvious, are now easier to locate. Keeping everyone in the loop is an important job for the FUS Council, so building a well-known website was something that they thought had to come out.
Funds to start this initiative were raised by the 2011 UBC Forestry Grad Committee. Selling Christmas Trees, conducting bake sales, receiving donations from various sources, developing Forestry events, issuing raffles, and much more fund raising activities made the 2011 Silver Ring Ceremony happen. Any extra money that was left over went towards a fund called the Class Act. The Class Act is a fund raised every year by the graduating committees of each Faculty at UBC. It is used to benefit future UBC students and each Grad Committee has a choice of how they want to spend it on their Faculty. The opportunity to make a new website was clear and we believe the funds went to a good cause.
5 Benefits of an improved website:
1) Reduce emails given by Student Services.
2) Increase connectivity between programs (mainly bridging the gap between Wood and other forestry programs).
3) Display relevant resources (ie. job postings, news websites, and research papers).
4) Advertise upcoming events and opportunities.
5) Showcase student achievements and initiatives.
The Future of this Website
There are many places that the FUS Council would like to take this website. Posting photo galleries of events, highlighting student achievements, displaying weekly poles, and coordinating Photo of the Week Contests are just the ideas that have scratched the surface so far. If you have anything you would like to contribute, send an email to email@example.com.
